DO I REALLY NEED TO BUDGET FOR I/T?
You may think this is a silly question, but a majority of U.S. small businesses do not have an annual budget for their company – let alone an I/T budget. Let’s be honest: running a small business is a lot of hard work. Most begin in basements, bootstrapped by bravado and bold ideas. The entrepreneurial spirit drives us to focus on important matters like closing sales, thinking strategically, and getting people to join your cultural phenom. We seldom think about the mundane things like budgets. Therefore, budgeting is typically reduced to snap decisions over time whenever an unforeseen expense arises. “Jim’s PC just died, and the IT guy said we need a new one!” exclaims the office manager. Then the boss replies, “Hmmm, ok, I guess we should get him one.” Sound familiar?
While budgets and the budgeting process can be tedious, laborious and boring, it is very important to do – especially for IT and especially because IT has become such an integral part of every business today. But it doesn’t have to be so painful or sleep inducing. In fact, a simple budget and some financial tools can be something the enables a business to operate much efficiently and strategically.
